What is birth and death registration?

According to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act-2004 (as last amended)-

Birth: the birth of a person alive;

Death: the cessation of a person's life; 

``Registration'' means registering the birth and death of a person in the register;

``Registration Record'' means any record, either by handwritten means or created through information technology, in which the birth or death of a person is recorded.
Method of birth registration

Under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 2004, a person's name, sex, date and place of birth, names of parents, their nationality and permanent address shall be entered into the computer by the designated registrar, including storage in the database and issuance of the birth registration certificate.

 
Death registration procedure

``Birth registration'' means the entry of a deceased person's name, date of death, place of death, sex, father/mother or spouse's name into a database by a designated registrar under the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 2004 and issuance of a death registration certificate.
Importance of birth and death registration

According to Article 7 of the United Nations Charter on the Rights of the Child “Every child to be registered immediately after birth”

• As per National Child Policy of Bangladesh 2011: 6.10.1- birth registration of all children should be ensured immediately after birth.

• Fundamental rights of the child

• Gaining state rights
Where to register the birth? The Chairman of the Union Parishad, the Mayor of the Municipality/City Corporation or any councilor or other officer authorized by the Mayor, the Executive Officer of the Cantonment Board and any officer authorized by the Embassies register births and deaths.
Can the same person register multiple births? Births cannot be registered more than once in favor of the same person. It is an offense punishable under Section 21 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 2004.
How to check whether a person has registered birth? If the birth registration is done online, it can be confirmed whether the birth registration has been done by entering the birth registration number and date of birth in the birth information verification option at orgbdr.gov.bd website.
